Awareness Exercises
Practicing telepathy with a group of friends will stand people in good stead when they come to developing their mediumship abilities. The whole process of communication is one of telepathy between the medium and those souls in spirit. By doing a few experiments in telepathy it will be possible to dispel any doubts or notions that some people have that mediums get all their information telepathically from the mind of the sitter.
A few attempts at mind reading should be enough to convince you that this would in fact be more difficult than obtaining it by spirit contact. Experiments in telepathy will help you understand the difficulties of spirit communication. Try getting one member of your group to think of a name. That person should write the name down on a notepad, and repeat it over and over to themselves, and see if anybody can pick up the name.
This particular experiment will help you understand one of the difficulties of spirit communication. The subconscious mind tends to work in images rather than words. Conveying a name, especially an unfamiliar one with which the recipient is unfamiliar is very difficult. That is why a medium may be unable to give the name of a communicator, even though they may give an accurate description of the communicators appearance or character. Common names with which the medium is more familiar will come across more easily, but foreign names and surnames are extremely difficult to pick up.
You may have success practicing telepathy with coloured sheets of paper. One member of the group concentrates on a colour and sends it to the receivers. The person trying to send the colour should flood their mind with it, not just thinking of the colour, but also things they associate with that colour, for instance if the colour is blue, picture a blue sky or blue sea and try to project that image too.
Another experiment to try is to draw a geometrical shape and have the sender transmit the image to the rest of the group. They may pick up the general idea of the shape, even if they do not know what the onject is, for example they may picture a triangle instead of a pyramid.
It should soon become apparent that some members of the group are better at sending than receiving. The receivers may have a greater potential for mediumship because their minds are more passive and receptive. Although the mind should be passive it also needs to be alert and attentive. It is like delicately tuning a radio into a remote station with a weak signal, where the slightest deviation of the needle on either side results in the loss of the transmission. You are the radio, and if you are in a disturbed emotional state, or straining too much, or overtired, or unwell, then the reception is bound to be shaky.
