This exercise is best if you can use a sage smudge stick. They can usually be purchased from new age stores, health stores, and Native American shops.
Rosemary and Jupiter fronds, tied tightly together with non inflammable twine along the stick and dried, also make excellent smudge sticks.
The seven directions, east, west, north south, and the self as centre, symbolise the 7 chakras, and you can visualise each one as you work.
If the smudge stick goes out say, 'blessed be, joined are we' Light the tip of your smudge stick, when the flame dies down blow on it gently until the end glows.
Visualise a circle around yourself and face the east.
Hold the smudge stick horizintally, directly in front of you and smudge a small circle in the air saying, 'I join myself with the powers of the east, enter and empower, I ask you, spirit guardians'
Face south, west and north in turn, smudging a clockwise circle in each position, and repeating the chants of the guardians of each direction.
Then crouch down and point the smudge stick to the ground (down) smudging another clockwise circle, this time around your feet saying 'I join myself with the powers of the earth, enter and empower, I ask you, Guardian and Mother'
Hold the smudge stick at waist level and smudge around yourself (the centre) saying 'I am part of the great chain of life, let all flow within me, as I flow with it'
Finally raise the smudge stick high, and then lower it slightly, drawing a clockwise circle of smoke, 2 or 3 finger breadths above your head, the centre of the Crown Chakra saying, 'I join myself with the powers of the sky, enter and empower, I ask you, Guardian and Father'
Smudge two more clockwise circles over the Crown and let your smudge stick burn through on a ceramic dish or container.
